Having entered my 30s, never being involved in athletics and rapidly getting out
of shape, I decided to make some changes in my lifestyle. After trying a variety
of activities, I concentrated on running and in my early 40s enjoyed regularly
competing in local 10 K runs. At the same time I bought a fully rigid mountain
bike that I rode only on weekends on the gravel roads and trails around my
house but I was definitely hooked. As soon as I could get the training wheels off
my sons bike I got him involved, and frequently dragged him out to the trails
with me. Since then we've had many great years of riding together, both locally,
and on our travels. When a foot injury caused me to hang up my running shoes
several years ago, I upgraded the mountain bike, bought a road bike,and
started cycling regularly. Now I can't get enough.
My goals for 2008 are to remain as competitive as possible through consistent,
structured off-season training. I will also make the effort to do more of my
training off-road in order to sharpen my mountain biking technical skills. But
most important to me is that I always maintain my enthusiasm for the pure joy
of riding, whether on the road or on the trail.
